NineBarLab is a research desk for home espresso equipment. We read the spec sheets, the service manuals, the owner forums and the long-term complaints, and we turn all of it into a straight answer about which machine is worth your money.
What we are, plainly
We do not run a test kitchen. We have not pulled shots on every machine we write about, and we will never pretend otherwise. Plenty of sites imply a lab they do not have; the numbers look authoritative and nobody checks. We would rather tell you where our information comes from and let you weigh it.
What we do instead is the part most sites skip: we compare machines on the specifications that actually change the coffee, we track what breaks after two years, and we read the reviews that manufacturers would rather you did not. What we do differently
- Every machine is assessed against the same published criteria, so comparisons across price bands mean something.
- We cite our sources. Where a figure comes from the manufacturer, we say so. Where it comes from owners, we say that too.
- We publish what we do not like. A review with no cons is an advertisement.
- We weight long-term reliability heavily. A machine that makes excellent espresso for eighteen months and then needs a service is not a good buy.
- No manufacturer sees a page before it publishes, and no assessment has ever been changed at a brand’s request.
What we cannot tell you
Being useful means being clear about the edges. Research cannot tell you how a portafilter feels in the hand, whether a steam wand is awkward at your counter height, or how loud a pump is at six in the morning. Where those things matter, we say that the question is unresolved rather than inventing an answer.

NineBarLab is written and edited by Owen Hartley, a pen name. We use one because the work here is research, not reputation: what matters is whether the sourcing holds up, and you can check that on every page. Corrections reach us through the contact page and we publish what changed.
