Best on a tight budget

Our verdict

A narrow, cheap platform that rewards modification and disappoints anyone expecting it to be finished. Budget for non-pressurised baskets and a grinder, or do not bother.

Best for: very small kitchens, and buyers willing to add baskets and a grinder

What we liked

  • Genuinely narrow at 5.9 inches, where most rivals need twice that
  • Low entry price to find out whether espresso is for you
  • Active owner community and available non-pressurised baskets
  • About 15 seconds between brewing and frothing

What we did not

  • Ships with pressurised baskets that cap what it can produce
  • 51 mm portafilter has the thinnest accessory market of the three formats
  • Manual frother rather than a proper steam wand
  • At 9.3 lb it is light enough that the body moves when you lock the portafilter

The Dedica is the machine people buy when the counter is 15 centimetres wide and the budget is small. At 5.9 inches across and 9.3 lb it is the narrowest real espresso machine most buyers will consider, and it costs a fraction of anything with a grinder attached.

What it actually is

A 15 bar vibration pump feeding a thermoblock, with a 51 mm portafilter and a 1.1 litre tank. De’Longhi quotes around 40 seconds to brew-ready and about 15 seconds to move between brewing and frothing. The 51 mm portafilter is the detail that defines the machine: it is smaller than the 54 mm Breville format and much smaller than the 58 mm commercial standard, which narrows the basket and accessory market considerably.

The pressurised basket question

This is where buyers get caught. Machines in this class typically ship with pressurised baskets, which force crema through a small hole regardless of grind quality. They make bad coffee look right and good coffee taste flat, and they cap what the machine can do.

The Dedica has an active community precisely because non-pressurised 51 mm baskets are available separately, and owners consistently report that swapping them is the single change that transforms the machine. Factor that purchase, and a decent grinder, into the real cost. Without both, you are buying a device that makes coffee-flavoured foam.

Where our information ends

We have not run this machine. We cannot tell you how stable a 9.3 lb machine feels when you twist a portafilter into it, how the manual frother compares to a proper steam wand in the hand, or how the plastic internals hold up past the warranty. We were unable to confirm the US warranty period with De’Longhi directly.

Who it is for

Buy it if space is the binding constraint and you accept that you are buying a platform to modify rather than a finished product. With non-pressurised baskets and a real grinder, it punches well above its price. Buy it also if you want to find out whether you actually enjoy making espresso before committing serious money.

Skip it if you want good coffee out of the box with no further purchases, or if you care about the accessory ecosystem. Our sourcing is explained on the how we research page.
